Hawthorne was first acknowledged as a major American author after the publication of "Twice-Told Tales" in 1837, when Henry Wadsworth Longfellow hailed him as a "new star" The appearance of "The Scarlet Letter" in 1850 prompted "Literary World" editor Evert Duyckinck to express a view that was to become a commonplace of Hawthorne commentary for the next fifty years: "our literature has given to the world no truer product of the American soil." Already the idea that Hawthorne's was "the" voice of American culture had been given prominent public statement.
